A panel of top doctors and researchers at the Cleveland Clinic, one of the nation’s leading non-profit academic medical centers, just released what they believe will be the top 10 medical innovations in 2019.

These advancements, noting their ability to transform the future of healthcare include, “alternate therapies for pain. The use of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Expanded window to treat stroke patients,” the press release cited.

Topping the list: “Alternate Therapy for Pain: Fighting the Opioid Crisis.” Wow. Are we really on the brink of solving a national crisis? Perhaps.

“Innovation and potential for hope comes by way of pharmacogenomic testing, which uses a patient’s genetic makeup to predict an individual’s metabolism of drugs, including some opiate-based drug,” press release states.

Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genes affect a person’s response to drugs. This tailors a person’s genetic makeup with effective and safe doses of medication.

“Many drugs that are currently available are ‘one size fits all,’ but they don’t work the same way for everyone. It can be difficult to predict who will benefit from a medication, who will not respond at all, and who will experience negative side effects (called adverse drug reactions),” according to the National Institute of Health.

The Cleveland Clinic confidently claims, “in 2019, with increased access to genetic testing, pharmacogenomics is poised to make significant inroads into precision medicine and potentially an end to the crisis.”
