Not for the people of Little Falls, Minn., who have been credited with solving their community\u2019s plaguing opioid misuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/danvergano\/overdose-prevention-little-falls-minnesota?bfsource=relatedmanual\">in-depth article from BuzzFeed News<\/a>, journalist Dan Vergano reports: \u201cThis small town has managed, in just five years, to curb its drug epidemic \u2014 a rare feat in a country where overdose deaths continue to rise, with more than 70,000 last year alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town \u2014 population 8,700 \u2014 didn\u2019t do anything earth shattering to remedy their opioid epidemic. They took $1.4 million in state grants since 2014 and wisely spent it on measures that make a real difference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They limited prescription painkiller refills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They expanded access to medication-assisted treatment programs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They placed users in treatment programs rather than jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cIn other words, they began treating addiction as a disease instead of a crime,\u201d the reporter wrote.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town\u2019s simple measures showed significant success. \u201cEmergency room visits to obtain painkillers fell from the top occurrence to out of the top 20 within six months after the hospital started monitoring prescriptions.
