We hear and see it so often that, dare I say, we\u2019ve almost become desensitized to the alarming fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s lives we\u2019re talking about. Human lives. One is one too many. Each victim still has so much life left to live.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/talkers\/wisconsin-man-once-imprisoned-now-brightens-lives-of-cancer-patients\">Kurt Stapleton<\/a>, for example. He\u2019s one of the fortunate survivors of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newseason.com\/addiction\/opioid-addiction-symptoms\/\">opioid use disorder<\/a> that evaded the ticking time bomb of death.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His story \u2014 one of failure, then comeback, then triumph \u2014 will warm your heart. It goes something like this\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stapleton learned to crochet in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was incarcerated for three and a half years for&nbsp;two counts of armed robbery. I was addicted to painkillers,\u201d he said in a recent news interview. \u201cI lost my job and hit rock bottom. I decided to steal pills from a pharmacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stapleton now works a full-time job and crochets hats for cancer patients in his free time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wendy Oren, a patient in Madison, Wis., being treated for ovarian cancer, wears one of Stapleton\u2019s hats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can&#8217;t put it into words \u2014 what someone thinks is the littlest thing. And for him to not even know me, to make sure I got a hat, it was just a wonderful feeling,\u201d Oren said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/02\/13\/health\/iyw-man-crochets-hats-cancer-patients-trnd\/index.html?no-st=1550255425\">article published by CNN.<\/a> \u201cI felt supported and loved.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stapleton has crocheted about 50 hats in the last month for cancer patients all over the world. He\u2019s also raised money to fill the hats with thoughtful necessities for a person undergoing chemo therapy, like candy, socks, lotion, lip balm and word puzzles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have changed my life and become a better person,\u201d Stapleton told his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channel3000.com\/news\/man-crochets-hats-for-cancer-patients-says-past-drug-abuse-prison-led-him-to-pay-it-forward\/1004129644\">local newspaper<\/a>. \u201cI now have a 3-year-old son who I am trying to lead by example. In 2006, my father passed away from cancer.
