Read This"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Parrino, the president of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aatod.org\">American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence<\/a>, wrote a compelling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearhealth.com\/articles\/2018\/06\/28\/medication-assisted_treatment_could_curb_the_opioid_epidemic_110798.html\">article<\/a> promoting the use of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to curb the opioid epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most conclusive statistic he presented in his highly informative article supporting the use of MAT for the treatment of opioid use disorder was this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifty percent of opioid addicted individuals who undergo MAT <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/news-events\/nida-notes\/2015\/11\/long-term-follow-up-medication-assisted-treatment-addiction-to-pain-relievers-yields-cause-optimism\">remain free of illicit drug use<\/a> after 18 months [in treatment]. By contrast, 90 percent of individuals who try to discontinue opioids without MAT <a href=\"https:\/\/healthblog.uofmhealth.org\/health-management\/medication-assisted-treatment-for-opioid-addiction-whats-available-what-works\">relapse within a year<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Why isn\u2019t MAT more widely accepted, promoted and used you may ask?<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s why, according to Parrino\u2019s article:<\/p>\n<p>Medicare does not cover MAT.<\/p>\n<p>Many states&#8217; Medicare programs do not cover MAT.<\/p>\n<p>Most commercial health insurers do not cover MAT.<\/p>\n<p>Parrino suggests that hope is on the horizon however.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFortunately, there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hassan.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/senator-hassan-joins-colleagues-in-introducing-bipartisan-legislation-to-expand-medication-assisted-treatment-for-opioid-addiction\">bipartisan Congressional support<\/a> for providing such Medicare Part B coverage to Medicare beneficiaries, who are treated in opioid treatment programs,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, he says, \u201ca number of policy making groups and organizations, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthexec.com\/topics\/policy\/what-ama-suggests-congress-includes-opioid-legislation\">American Medical Association<\/a> and the President&#8217;s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis, have urged them to change these policies so that everyone has access to treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"https:\/\/newseason.com\">New Season<\/a>, we\u2019re honored and privileged to be part of the solution to end the opioid epidemic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Parrino, the president of American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence, wrote a compelling article promoting the use of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to curb the opioid epidemic.
